MATIC Gas Fee History: How Fees Have Changed Over Time

Polygon has maintained consistently low gas fees since launch, with only rare spikes caused by specific network events.

Polygon's gas fees have been remarkably stable throughout its history. When Polygon PoS launched in 2020, fees were essentially zero — a fraction of a gwei. As the network grew and DeFi protocols deployed on Polygon through 2021 and 2022, fees increased slightly but remained far below Ethereum. The average cost of a transaction stayed well under $0.01 throughout this growth phase.

How Gas Fees Are Calculated:

In March 2023, Polygon Labs researchers documented a notable fee spike event where some transactions were priced above 4 MATIC — roughly 80 times the typical median. Investigation revealed that the spike was caused by a small set of arbitrage bots (less than 0.03% of all transactions) running a Priority Gas Auction on-chain. The bots competed aggressively for block space, inflating prices temporarily. The incident prompted Polygon Labs to explore solutions to mitigate MEV-related fee spikes.

What Causes Temporary Fee Spikes on Polygon?

By 2024 and into 2026, the median Polygon gas fee has returned to and remained at normal sub-cent levels. The average cost per transaction on Polygon PoS is approximately $0.001–$0.015 for typical user operations. The growth of Polygon's zkEVM and other scaling improvements has also contributed to maintaining fee stability as overall usage has grown.dit quo minus id quod maxime placeat facere possimus, on omnis voluptas temporibus autemi quibusdam et aut officiis debitis
